AFIRE is the official voice of the foreign real estate industry in the United States.
The Association of Foreign Investors in Real Estate (AFIRE) was founded in 1988 with strong support from Dutch pension funds and Japanese institutions. German investment firms now constitute the largest nationality of investors. While inbound investment into the US remains our members' common bond, their portfolios have become increasingly global in scope.
Representing the "who's who" in the global real estate investment industry, AFIRE membership is exclusive to principals and senior executives. AFIRE provides a platform for top investors to communicate through global meetings in the US, Europe, and key cities around the world. From market trends, legislation and tax regulations to informative publications and resources, AFIRE covers the most important current topics of interest to ensure that the foreign investor is as informed as the domestic investor. AFIRE is a strong advocate of legislative and regulatory action to keep foreign investors in the US competitive with other global markets. In particular, AFIRE advocates modifications in the FIRPTA laws in the US and is an active participant in the Invest in America Coalition to reform FIRPTA.
AFIRE typically holds four educational conference each year, as well as exclusive brunch gatherings at MIPIM and EXPO REAL. Attendance at meetings is restricted to AFIRE members and specifically invited guests. Membership is granted on a corporate basis and by invitation only, and is an acknowledgement of an insitution's standing in the international real estate community.
The Winter Conference is an annual two-day meeting held in February in New York City. Featured topics are specific to the US, with a portion directly focused on New York City and the surrounding areas. Results of the AFIRE Annual Foreign Investment Survey, a member survey highlighting trends in international real estate investment, are presented at the Winter Conference.
The European Conference takes place during June in a European city, previously held in Amsterdam, Cologne, London, Berlin and Paris. While there is always a focus on US real estate topics, there is also a strong focus on the local region and is opportune for globalnetworking.
The Annual Membership Meeting is held in September and encompasses all aspects of US real estate, with meeting locations rotating between Washington, DC, and other key US cities, including Boston, San Francisco and Chicago. Distinguished US policy makers and opinion leaders - including George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Gordon Brown, Madeleine Albright and Condoleezza Rice - are among the list of influential professionals who have spoken at AFIRE Membership Meetings.
Outreach Conferences have been held in various locations, such as Beijing, Stockholm, Melbourne, Toronto, Dublin and Dubai.
