As the publisher and editor of AFIRE’s growing suite of thought leadership in commercial real estate, we are pleased to present this very special Issue #21 of Summit Journal—the inaugural AFIRE Compendium.

As a members-only resource, the Compendium is the realization of AFIRE’s new, hybrid member directory and relationship resource platform, available as both a digital and print guide for global investors looking to maximize pathways and partnerships for US real estate investment.

Doubling as an abbreviated Issue #21 of the journal itself, this special product includes some of the high-quality thought leadership published in standard issues of Summit, but compliments those insights with an up-to-date directory of the full AFIRE membership—including their specialties, markets, sectors, and differentiators that make them leading partners and investors in US commercial real estate representing more than 175 organizations from 24 countries, and more than $4 trillion AUM.

While the directory elements of the Compendium are limited to AFIRE members only, we are pleased to present key parts of this special edition to our broader readership of 10,000 unique global readers. In our view, this issue arrives at exactly the right time for our industry: a time of historic, global change.

At times like these, when countries are renegotiating relationships, when rules for trade and investment are rebalancing, and when new risks are daily coming to the fore, insularity can feel increasingly attractive.

For business leaders working in this context, it can be tempting to diminish the relevance of organizations, associations, and activities that cross international borders to find common ground through profit and partnerships. In a volatile global environment, building and strengthening connections across borders can feel like a bridge too far.

Despite a growing push from various polities towards protectionism, the fact is that we all live and invest in a global context, and in the face of historic change, it is more important than ever to cultivate a global mindset.

For our industry, the perspectives and experiences of investors, builders, and operators around the world are our most critical form of capital. Your colleagues from Tokyo to Abu Dhabi, London to Los Angeles, Sydney to New York, and everywhere in between, can see things—and uncover value—that might be hidden to you in your own home market.
